我不在一年之内把他们从你面前赶出去，恐怕地会荒废，野地的走兽增多危害你。我要逐渐把他们从你面前赶出去，直到你的人数增多，承受那地为业。我要定你的疆界，从红海直到非利士海，从旷野直到大河。我要把那地的居民交在你手中，你要把他们从你面前赶出去。不可跟他们和他们的神明立约。他们不可住在你的地上，免得他们使你得罪我。你若事奉他们的神明，必成为你的圈套。”

至于住耶路撒冷的耶布斯人，犹大人不能把他们赶出去。于是，耶布斯人与犹大人同住在耶路撒冷，直到今日。

要从你们面前赶出那地所有的居民，摧毁他们一切的石像和铸成的偶像，也要拆毁他们一切的丘坛。你们要占领那地，住在那里，因我已把那地赐给你们为业。你们要按照宗族抽签，承受土地：人多的要多给他们产业；人少的要少给他们产业。抽到何地给何人，那地就属于他。你们要按照父系的支派承受产业。倘若你们不把那地的居民从你们面前赶出去，那留下的居民就必成为你们眼中的刺，肋下的荆棘，也必在你们所住的地上扰乱你们；我想要怎样待他们，也必照样待你们。”

他们却没有赶出住在基色的迦南人。迦南人就住在以法莲人中，成为服劳役的仆人，直到今日。

所以，不要让罪在你们必死的身上掌权，使你们顺从身体的私欲。也不要把你们的肢体献给罪作不义的工具，倒要像从死人中活着的人，把自己献给上帝，并把你们的肢体献给上帝作义的工具。罪必不能作你们的主，因你们不在律法之下，而是在恩典之下。
