我不在一年之內就把他們從你面前趕出去，恐怕這地荒涼，野地的獸多起來來害你。我是要漸漸把他們從你面前趕出去，等到你孳生繁衍、承受那地為產業之時為止。我必定你的境界，從蘆葦海直到非利士海，從曠野直到大河。我必將那地的居民交在你手中，使你將他們從你面前趕出去。不可跟他們和他們的神立約。別讓他們住在你的地上，恐怕他們使你犯罪敵擋我；你若事奉他們的神，這就會餌誘你入於網羅。』

至於住耶路撒冷的耶布斯人、猶大人卻不能把他們趕出；耶布斯人就和猶大人同住在耶路撒冷、直到今日。

就要把那地所有的居民從你們面前趕出去，毁壞他們一切的石頭鏨像，毁壞他們一切鑄成的像，又拆毁他們一切的邱壇；你們就要取得那地以為業，住在那裏，因為我把那地給了你們去擁為己業。你們要按家族憑拈鬮承受那地以為業；人多的、要把產業多分給他們，人少的、要把產業少分給他們；拈出哪一塊地給哪一族，就要歸哪一族；你們要按父系支派而承受產業。你們若不把那地的居民從你們面前趕出去，你們所讓存留的人就會成了你們眼中的刺、肋下的荊棘，也會在你們所住的地擾害你們。並且我曾經想要怎樣待他們的、我也必照樣待你們。』

但是他們沒有把住基色的迦南人趕出；於是迦南人住在以法蓮中間、直到今日；他們成為作苦工的奴隸。

所以不可容罪在你們能死的身體上掌王權，以致聽從它的私慾。也不可將你們的肢體獻給罪、做不義的工具。卻要將自己獻給上帝，像從死人中起來而活着，將你們的肢體獻給上帝、做義的工具；罪就不能做主管轄你們了；因為你們不在律法之下，乃在恩典之下。
