For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

耶和华对摩西说：“你回到埃及去的时候，要留意将我交在你手中的一切奇事行在法老面前。但我要任凭他的心刚硬，他必不放百姓走。

但是这些民族的城镇，就是耶和华—你上帝所赐给你的产业，其中凡有气息的，一个都不可存留。你要照耶和华—你上帝所吩咐的，将这些赫人、亚摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人全都灭绝，

你要吞灭耶和华—你的上帝交给你的各民族，你的眼目不可顾惜他们。你也不可事奉他们的神明，因为这必成为你的圈套。

约书亚夺了这些王的一切城镇，擒获了这些王，用刀杀了他们，把他们完全灭尽，正如耶和华的仆人摩西所吩咐的。至于造在山冈上的城镇，除了夏琐以外，以色列人都没有焚烧。约书亚只焚烧了夏琐。从那些城镇所夺的财物和牲畜，以色列人都取为自己的掠物。至于所有的人，他们都用刀杀了，直到灭尽；凡有气息的，没有留下一个。耶和华怎样吩咐他的仆人摩西，摩西就这样吩咐约书亚，约书亚也照样做了。凡耶和华所吩咐摩西的，约书亚没有一件偏离不做的。

倘若上帝要显明他的愤怒，彰显他的权能，难道不可多多忍耐宽容那应受愤怒、预备遭毁灭的器皿吗？这是为了要把他丰盛的荣耀彰显在那蒙怜悯、早预备得荣耀的器皿上。

然而，我让你存活，是为了要使你看见我的大能，并要使我的名传遍全地。

但希实本王西宏不肯让我们从他那里经过，因为耶和华—你的上帝使他性情顽梗，内心刚硬，为要把他交在你手中，像今日一样。

看哪，我要任凭埃及人的心刚硬，他们就跟着下去。我要在法老和他的全军、战车、战车长身上得荣耀。

他的父母并不知道这事是出于耶和华，因为他在找机会攻击非利士人。那时，非利士人辖制以色列人。

他说：“你去告诉这百姓说：‘你们听了又听，却不明白；看了又看，却不晓得。’要使这百姓心蒙油脂，耳朵发沉，眼睛昏花；恐怕他们眼睛看见，耳朵听见，心里明白，回转过来，就得医治。”

耶和华说：‘谁去引诱亚哈上基列的拉末去阵亡呢？’这个这样说，那个那样说。随后有一个灵出来，站在耶和华面前，说：‘我去引诱他。’耶和华问他：‘用什么方法呢？’他说：‘我要出去，在他众先知的口中成为谎言的灵。’耶和华说：‘这样，你去引诱他，必能成功。你出去，照样做吧！’现在，看哪，耶和华使谎言的灵入了你所有的这些先知的口，并且耶和华已经宣告要降祸于你。”

先知与王说话的时候，王对他说：“难道我们立你作王的谋士吗？你住口吧！为何要挨打呢？”先知就止住了，却说：“我知道上帝已定意要消灭你，因为你行这事，不听从我的劝戒。”

人若得罪人，有上帝可以裁决；人若得罪耶和华，谁能为他代求呢？”然而他们还是不听父亲的话，因为耶和华想要他们死。

王不依从百姓，因这事件是出于耶和华，为要应验耶和华藉示罗人亚希雅对尼八的儿子耶罗波安所说的话。
