For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

For the Lord hardened their hearts and caused them to fight the Israelites. So they were completely destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

So all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took and struck with the edge of the sword. He utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Israel burned none of them, except Hazor only, which Joshua burned.And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the children of Israel took as booty for themselves; but they struck every man with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they left none breathing.As the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory,

And the Lord said,‘ Who will persuade Ahab to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ So one spoke in this manner, and another spoke in that manner.Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, and said,‘ I will persuade him.’The Lord said to him,‘ In what way?’ So he said,‘ I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And the Lord said,‘ You shall persuade him, and also prevail. Go out and do so.’Therefore look! The Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these prophets of yours, and the Lord has declared disaster against you.”

So it was, as he talked with him, that the king said to him,“ Have we made you the king’s counselor? Cease! Why should you be killed?” Then the prophet ceased, and said,“ I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not heeded my advice.”

If one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, because the Lord desired to kill them.

So the king did not listen to the people; for the turn of events was from the Lord, that He might fulfill His word, which the Lord had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
