For it was the Lord himself who hardened their hearts to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

The Lord himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The Lord had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites.

For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses.

耶和华对摩西说：“你起程回到埃及去的时候，要留意我交在你手里的一切奇事，把它们行在法老面前；我却要使他的心刚硬，他就不让人民离开。

只是在耶和华你的神赐给你作产业的这些国民的城市里，凡有气息的，连一个你也不可让他活着；只要照着耶和华你的神吩咐你的，把赫人、亚摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人，完全灭绝；

耶和华你的神交给你的所有民族，你都要把他们消灭；你的眼不可怜惜他们；你也不可事奉他们的神，因为这必成为你的网罗。

约书亚夺取了那些王的一切城镇，又擒获那些城镇所有的王；他用刀击杀了他们，把一切完全毁灭，正如耶和华仆人摩西所吩咐的。至于那些立在土丘上的城，除了夏琐以外，以色列人都没有焚烧；约书亚只烧了夏琐。那些城所有的战利品和牲畜，以色列人都据为己有；只是把所有的人都用刀击杀了，直到把他们杀尽；有气息的，他们没有留下一个。耶和华怎样吩咐他的仆人摩西，摩西就怎样吩咐约书亚，约书亚也照样行了；耶和华吩咐摩西的一切，约书亚没有一样不办妥的。

如果神有意要显明他的忿怒，彰显他的大能，而多多容忍那可怒、预备遭毁灭的器皿，为了要使他丰盛的荣耀，彰显在那蒙恩、早已预备要得荣耀的器皿上，这又有什么不可呢？

然而我使你存留，是为了使你看见我的能力，并且在全地上传讲我的名。

但是希实本王西宏不肯让我们从他那里经过，因为耶和华我们的神使他的心意顽固，使他的心刚硬，为要把他交在你的手里，像今日一样。

看哪，我要使埃及人的心刚硬，他们就必跟着以色列人下去；这样，我必在法老和他的全军身上，以及他的马车和马兵身上得到荣耀。

他的父母却不知道这事是出于耶和华，因为他正在找机会攻击非利士人。那时非利士人正统治着以色列人。

他说：“你去告诉这子民，说：‘你们听了又听，却不明白；看了又看，却不晓得。’你要使这子民的心思迟钝（“迟钝”直译是“蒙脂油”），耳朵不灵，眼睛昏暗，免得他们眼睛看见，耳朵听见，心里明白，回转过来，得到医治。”

耶和华说：‘谁去引诱亚哈，使他上基列的拉末阵亡呢？’有说这样的，有说那样的。后来有一个灵出来，站在耶和华面前，说：‘我去引诱他。’耶和华问他：‘你用什么方法呢？’他回答：‘我要出去，在亚哈所有先知的口中，作说谎的灵。’耶和华说：‘你可以去引诱他，你也必能成功，你去这样行吧！’现在，耶和华已经把说谎的灵放在你这些先知的口中，耶和华已经命定灾祸临到你。”

先知向王讲话的时候，王对他说：“我们立了你作王的谋士吗？住口吧！你要挨打吗？”先知就住口，可是又说：“我知道神已定意消灭你，因为你作了这事，又不听从我的劝戒。”

如果有人得罪人，有官长（“官长”原文作“神”）惩罚他；如果有人得罪耶和华，有谁为他求情呢？”他们却不听父亲的话，因为耶和华有意要杀他们。

王不肯听从民众的请求，因为这个转变是出于耶和华，为要应验他藉示罗人亚希雅对尼八的儿子耶罗波安所说的话。
