Now Adoni- Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies.

Adoni- Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni- Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.

As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,

邑中男女老幼、牛羊與驢、皆以刃殲之、

撒冷王麥基洗德、為至高上帝之祭司、攜餅與酒而出、

伏兵亦出邑擊之、艾人困於其中、以色列人前後擊之、靡有孑遺、無得脫者、生擒艾王、解至約書亞、以色列人在田野、既盡殺所追之艾人、使殞於刃、乃返於邑、以刃屠之、是日艾民亡者、男女計一萬二千人、蓋約書亞執戟指艾、不縮其手、迨及盡滅其民、惟邑中之牲畜貨財、以色列人取而歸己、遵耶和華諭約書亞之命、約書亞焚艾、使永為邱墟、荒廢至今、懸艾王於木、至於暮、日入時、循約書亞命、取屍下木、投諸邑門、壘石為堆、至今猶存、○

宜待艾與其王、如昔之待耶利哥與其王然、惟所獲之貨財牲畜、爾曹可取為己有、當設伏於邑西、

居基遍之希未人而外、無一邑與以色列人修好者、以色列人悉戰而取之、蓋耶和華聽其剛愎厥心、與以色列人戰、而被翦滅、不蒙矜恤、循耶和華諭摩西之命、○

約書亞與之修好立約、容其生存、會中牧伯向之發誓、立約後、越三日、聞其為鄰、居於其中、以色列人啟行、三日至其邑、即基遍、基非拉、比錄、基列耶琳、以色列人不擊之、因其牧伯曾指以色列之上帝耶和華、向之發誓、會眾遂怨牧伯、牧伯謂會眾曰、我儕既指以色列之上帝耶和華而誓、不可害之、既與之誓、必容其生存、免震怒及我、又曰、當容其生存、於是使為採薪者、汲水者、服事會眾、遵牧伯所言、約書亞召之曰、爾居我中、何言離此甚遠、以欺我耶、因此爾必服詛、為奴之人歷世不絕、採薪汲水、以供我上帝室、對曰、有人確告僕云、爾上帝耶和華曾諭其僕摩西、以此全地賜爾、悉滅其民、故我甚懼、以命難保、遂行是事、今我在爾手、爾所視為善為正者、則行之、於是約書亞救之、脫於以色列人手、免遭殺戮、其待之如此、是日使在耶和華所簡之處、為會眾及耶和華之壇、採薪汲水、至於今日、

夫此麥基洗德撒冷王也、為至高上帝之祭司、昔遇亞伯拉罕攻殺諸王而旋、則祝之、
