Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die.“ I have had enough, Lord,” he said.“ Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.”

A good reputation is more valuable than costly perfume. And the day you die is better than the day you are born.

I would rather be strangled— rather die than suffer like this.I hate my life and don’t want to go on living. Oh, leave me alone for my few remaining days.

“ Oh, why give light to those in misery, and life to those who are bitter?They long for death, and it won’t come. They search for death more eagerly than for hidden treasure.

And as the sun grew hot, God arranged for a scorching east wind to blow on Jonah. The sun beat down on his head until he grew faint and wished to die.“ Death is certainly better than living like this!” he exclaimed.

May no one celebrate the day of my birth.I curse the messenger who told my father,“ Good news— you have a son!”Let him be destroyed like the cities of old that the Lord overthrew without mercy. Terrify him all day long with battle shouts,because he did not kill me at birth. Oh, that I had died in my mother’s womb, that her body had been my grave!Why was I ever born? My entire life has been filled with trouble, sorrow, and shame.

If this is how you intend to treat me, just go ahead and kill me. Do me a favor and spare me this misery!”

For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better.I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith.
