亚哈听见这些话，就撕裂自己的衣服，披上麻布，禁食，睡在麻布上，并且神色颓丧地行走。耶和华的话临到提斯比人以利亚说：“你看见了亚哈在我面前怎样谦卑自己，因为他在我面前谦卑自己，所以他还在世的日子，我必不降这灾祸；到他儿子的日子，我必降这灾祸与他的家。”

耶和华对这事改变心意，耶和华说：“这事不会发生。”

他在人面前歌唱，说：‘我犯了罪，颠倒是非，但我没有受到应得的报应。他救赎我的性命免入深坑，我的生命必得见光明。’

“我清楚听见以法莲为自己哀叹，说：‘你管教了我，我像一头不驯服的牛犊受管教；求你使我回转，我就得以回转，因为你是耶和华我的神。我回转以后，就深深悔悟；我醒觉以后，就拍腿悔恨。因为我承受年幼时的耻辱，我感到羞耻和惭愧。’以法莲是我亲爱的儿子吗？是我喜悦的孩子吗？每逢我说话攻击他，我必再次记念他。因此，我的心恋慕他；我必定怜悯他。”这是耶和华的宣告。

你们要撕裂你们的心肠，不要撕裂你们的衣服。并要归向耶和华你们的神，因为他有恩典有怜悯，不轻易发怒，并且有丰盛的慈爱，随时转意不降灾祸。

审判的时候，尼尼微人要和这世代的人一同起来，他们要定这个世代的罪，因为尼尼微人听了约拿所传的就悔改了。你看，这里有一位是比约拿更大的。

于是他起来往父亲那里去。他还在远处时，他父亲看见了他，就动了慈心，跑过去抱着他，连连与他亲吻。

就向耶和华祷告，说：“耶和华啊！我还在本国的时候，不是这样说过吗？我知道你是有恩典有怜悯的神，不轻易发怒，并且有丰盛的慈爱，转意不降灾祸，所以我才急忙逃往他施去。
