To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.

I sank down to the bottom of the mountains. I thought I had died and gone down into the grave forever. But you are the Lord my God. You brought my life up from the very edge of the pit of death.

For you will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful one to see decay.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has gathered the dust of the earth in a measure or weighed the mountains on a balance and the hills on the scales?

God, you will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and treachery will not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.

“ What gain is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your truth?

Where were you when I established the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?What supports its foundations? Or who laid its cornerstonewhile the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?Who enclosed the sea behind doors when it burst from the womb,when I made the clouds its garment and total darkness its blanket,when I determined its boundaries and put its bars and doors in place,when I declared,“ You may come this far, but no farther; your proud waves stop here”?

For fire has been kindled because of my anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

He stands and shakes the earth; he looks and startles the nations. The age-old mountains break apart; the ancient hills sink down. His pathways are ancient.

You covered it with the deep as if it were a garment; the water stood above the mountains.

The mountains see you and shudder; a downpour of water sweeps by. The deep roars with its voice and lifts its waves high.

He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will continue to see the light.”
