To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit.

What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

Or who stretched the line upon it?Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner- stone thereof,When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?Or who shut up the sea with doors, When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;When I made clouds the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddling- band for it,And marked out for it my bound, And set bars and doors,And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And burneth unto the lowest Sheol, And devoureth the earth with its increase, And setteth on fire the foundations of the mountains.

He stood, and measured the earth; He beheld, and drove asunder the nations; And the eternal mountains were scattered; The everlasting hills did bow; His goings were as of old.

Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a vesture; The waters stood above the mountains.

The mountains saw thee, and were afraid; The tempest of waters passed by; The deep uttered its voice, And lifted up its hands on high.

He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit, And my life shall behold the light.
