Then the sailors said to each other,“ Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

Here is what the sailors said to one another.“ Someone is to blame for getting us into all this trouble. Come. Let’s cast lots to find out who it is.” So they did. And Jonah was picked.

And they said to one another,“ Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

Then the crew cast lots to see which of them had offended the gods and caused the terrible storm. When they did this, the lots identified Jonah as the culprit.

“ Come on!” the sailors said to each other.“ Let’s cast lots. Then we’ll know who is to blame for this trouble we’re in.” So they cast lots, and the lot singled out Jonah.

You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove what is contaminating you.”In the morning you must approach in tribal order. The tribe the LORD selects must approach by clans. The clan the LORD selects must approach by families. The family the LORD selects must approach man by man.The one caught with the riches must be burned up along with all who belong to him, because he violated the LORD’s covenant and did such a disgraceful thing in Israel.’”Bright and early the next morning Joshua made Israel approach in tribal order and the tribe of Judah was selected.He then made the clans of Judah approach and the clan of the Zerahites was selected. He made the clan of the Zerahites approach and Zabdi was selected.He then made Zabdi’s family approach man by man and Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected.

They help one another; one says to the other,‘ Be strong!’The craftsman encourages the metalsmith, the one who wields the hammer encourages the one who pounds on the anvil. He approves the quality of the welding, and nails it down so it won’t fall over.”

The LORD responded to Joshua,“ Get up! Why are you lying there face down?

Then Saul said,“ O LORD God of Israel! If this sin has been committed by me or by my son Jonathan, then, O LORD God of Israel, respond with Urim. But if this sin has been committed by your people Israel, respond with Thummim.” Then Jonathan and Saul were indicated by lot, while the army was exonerated.Then Saul said,“ Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan!” Jonathan was indicated by lot.

Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot.Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the family of Matri was chosen by lot. At last Saul son of Kish was chosen by lot. But when they looked for him, he was nowhere to be found.

The dice are thrown into the lap, but their every decision is from the LORD.

“ But if you do not do this, then look, you will have sinned against the LORD. And know that your sin will find you out.

When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by throwing dice.

So then, do not judge anything before the time. Wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the motives of hearts. Then each will receive recognition from God.

After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave his people their land as an inheritance.

When Gideon arrived, he heard a man telling another man about a dream he had. The man said,“ Look! I had a dream. I saw a stale cake of barley bread rolling into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent so hard it knocked it over and turned it upside down. The tent just collapsed.”The other man said,“ Without a doubt this symbolizes the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God is handing Midian and all the army over to him.”

So they proposed two candidates: Joseph called Barsabbas( also called Justus) and Matthias.Then they prayed,“ Lord, you know the hearts of all. Show us which one of these two you have chosento assume the task of this service and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”Then they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias; so he was counted with the eleven apostles.

Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: We will attack the city as the lot dictates.We will take ten of every group of a hundred men from all the tribes of Israel( and a hundred of every group of a thousand, and a thousand of every group of ten thousand) to get supplies for the army. When they arrive in Gibeah of Benjamin they will punish them for the atrocity which they committed in Israel.”

They are dividing up my clothes among themselves; they are rolling dice for my garments.

Then Saul said,“ All you leaders of the army come here. Find out how this sin occurred today.For as surely as the LORD, the deliverer of Israel, lives, even if it turns out to be my own son Jonathan, he will certainly die!” But no one from the army said anything.

I will say to God,‘ Do not condemn me; tell me why you are contending with me.’

In the first month( that is, the month of Nisan), in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus’ reign, pur( that is, the lot) was cast before Haman in order to determine a day and a month. It turned out to be the twelfth month( that is, the month of Adar).

“ The entire community of the LORD says,‘ Why have you disobeyed the God of Israel by turning back today from following the LORD? You built an altar for yourselves and have rebelled today against the LORD.The sin we committed at Peor was bad enough. To this very day we have not purified ourselves; it even brought a plague on the community of the LORD.Now today you dare to turn back from following the LORD! You are rebelling today against the LORD; tomorrow he may break out in anger against the entire community of Israel.But if your own land is impure, cross over to the LORD’s own land, where the LORD himself lives, and settle down among us. But don’t rebel against the LORD or us by building for yourselves an altar aside from the altar of the LORD our God.When Achan son of Zerah disobeyed the command about the city’s riches, the entire Israelite community was judged, though only one man had sinned. He most certainly died for his sin!’”
