又謂之曰、我當何以待爾、使海為我而恬靜乎、因海久而愈盪、

又曰、今海震盪愈甚、當若何待爾、則風浪可息。

又曰、今海之波濤洶湧已甚、當若何待爾、使海恬靜乎、

So they said to him,“ What should we do to you to calm this sea that’s against us?” For the sea was getting worse and worse.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

Because the storm was growing worse and worse, they said to him,“ What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”

Then they said to him,“ What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.

And the Lord said,“ It is because of Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them( now the Gibeonites were not of the sons of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites, and the sons of Israel had made a covenant with them, but Saul had sought to kill them in his zeal for the sons of Israel and Judah).David said to the Gibeonites,“ What should I do for you? And how can I make amends, so that you will bless the inheritance of the Lord?”Then the Gibeonites said to him,“ For us it is not a matter of silver or gold with Saul or his house, nor is it for us to put anyone to death in Israel.” Nevertheless David said,“ I will do for you whatever you say.”So they said to the king,“ The man who destroyed us and who planned to eliminate us so that we would not exist within any border of Israel—let seven men from his sons be given to us, and we will hang them before the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of the Lord.” And the king said,“ I will give them.”

When David got up in the morning, the word of the Lord came to Gad the prophet, David’s seer, saying,“ Go and speak to David,‘ This is what the Lord says:“ I am imposing upon you three choices; choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you.” ’ ”So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him,“ Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee for three months before your enemies while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ of plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.”

With what shall I come to the Lord And bow myself before the God on high? Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings, With yearling calves?Does the Lord take pleasure in thousands of rams, In ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give Him my firstborn for my wrongdoings, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying,“ What are we to do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we may send it to its place.”And they said,“ If you are going to send the ark of the God of Israel away, do not send it empty; but you shall certainly return to Him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be revealed to you why His hand does not leave you.”
