新酒枯竭，葡萄樹衰殘，心裡歡樂的都嘆息。歡快的鼓聲止息，歡騰者的喧嚷停止，歡快的琴聲也止息了。他們不再喝酒唱歌；烈酒對飲者也變得苦澀。荒涼的城邑破敗，家家關門閉戶，無人能進。街上有為酒哭喊的聲音；一切歡樂都已黯淡，地上的喜樂都已離去。

安然無慮的女子啊，再過一年多，你們就必顫抖！因為葡萄的收穫期必不再有，果實的收穫期也必不再來。安逸的婦女啊，你們戰兢吧！安然無慮的女子啊，你們顫抖吧！你們脫下衣服，赤著身子，束上麻布吧！為著美好的田地，為著多結果實的葡萄樹，你們捶胸哀哭吧！

「你們要謹慎自守，免得你們的心因宴樂、醉酒和今生的憂慮變得遲鈍，那日子就會像網羅一樣突然臨到你們，因為那日子將要臨到所有住在全地面上的人。你們要時刻警醒、禱告，使你們能夠逃避這一切將要發生的事，好站立在人子面前。」

現在來吧，你們這些富有的人哪！應當為那些將要臨到你們的慘禍而痛哭、哀號！

「有一個財主，身穿紫色袍子和細麻衣，天天奢華宴樂。

再者，你們已經看見了這個時代，是你們早應該從沉睡中醒過來的時候，因為比我們初信的時候，我們的救恩現在更近了。黑夜已深，白晝近了。所以，我們要脫去黑暗的行為，配上光明的兵器。我們要行事端正，好像在白晝中那樣：不可荒宴、醉酒；不可淫亂、好色；不可紛爭、嫉妒。相反，要穿上主耶穌基督；不要為了私慾而在屬肉體的事上做任何安排。

財主在陰間的痛苦中，舉目遠遠地望見亞伯拉罕，又望見拉撒路在他懷裡，就呼喚說：『我父亞伯拉罕，可憐我吧！請打發拉撒路用指頭蘸點水，涼一下我的舌頭吧，因為我在這火焰裡，極其痛苦！』「可是亞伯拉罕說：『孩子啊，你當想起，你一生怎樣享了你的福，而拉撒路怎樣受了苦；但如今他在這裡受到安慰，你卻在痛苦中。
