As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so one who goes down to the grave does not return.

When a cloud disappears, it’s gone forever. And anyone who goes down to the grave never returns.

As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up;

Just as a cloud dissipates and vanishes, those who die will not come back.

今子已死、我禁食何為、豈能返其魂乎。我將歸子所、子不復就我。

患難之至、猶飄風之來、我榮已去、我福不長、等諸浮雲。

復閱數載、我必長逝不返矣。

人則異是、始則血衰、既而氣絕、歸於無有。如潦之易竭、如澮之立涸、屈而不伸、寢而不寤、必也彼蒼窮盡之日、斯人有復生之時。願上帝藏我於墓寢、否則處我於隱僻、以俟災消禍弭、又不然、定以何日、然後釋我。人既死亡、豈能復生、我生苦境、必有終年、乃逝世。

然後長往不返、至幽暗陰翳之地。

我眾終必有死、如水傾地、不能復聚、故上帝不使償命、別設一法、俾亡者得免驅逐。

天朗氣爽、靉靆俱散、

不得在世、瞻望耶和華、一入陰府、不見我同人、

大哉上帝之智乎、雖上窮碧落、下及黃泉、周行陸地、徧歷滄海、亦終莫之能測。

請爾舍予、庶可少息我力、然後長往不返兮。
