But how terrible it will be for those who do what is evil! Trouble is about to fall on them. They will be paid back for the evil things they’ve done.

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me. He will be one of your own people. You must listen to him.At Mount Horeb you asked the Lord your God for a prophet. You asked him on the day you gathered together. You said,“ We don’t want to hear the voice of the Lord our God. We don’t want to see this great fire anymore. If we do, we’ll die.”The Lord said to me,“ What they are saying is good.I will raise up for them a prophet like you. He will be one of their own people. I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him to say.The prophet will speak in my name. But someone might not listen to what I say through the prophet. I will hold that person responsible for not listening.But suppose a prophet dares to speak in my name something I have not commanded. Or he speaks in the name of other gods. Then that prophet must be put to death.”You will say to yourselves,“ How can we know when a message hasn’t been spoken by the Lord?”Sometimes a prophet will announce something in the name of the Lord. And it won’t take place or come true. Then that’s a message the Lord hasn’t told him to speak. That prophet has dared to speak on his own authority. So don’t be afraid of what he says.

They lose all hope of escaping the darkness of death. They will certainly be killed by swords.

You are standing here with us today in front of the Lord our God. And I’m also making this covenant with those who aren’t here today.You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt. You also know how we passed through other countries on the way here.You saw the statues of their gods made out of wood, stone, silver and gold. The Lord hates those statues.Make sure there isn’t a man or woman among your families or tribes who turns away from the Lord our God. No one must worship the gods of those nations. Make sure that kind of worship doesn’t spread like bitter poison through your whole community.Some people who worship those gods will hear the promise that seals the covenant I’m making. They think they can escape trouble by what they’re saying. They say,“ We’ll be safe, even though we’re stubborn and go our own way.” But they will bring trouble on the whole land.The Lord will never be willing to forgive those people. His great anger will blaze out against them. All the curses I’ve written down in this book will fall on them. And the Lord will erase any mention of them from the earth.

Once more Jesus said to them,“ I am going away. You will look for me, and you will die in your sin. You can’t come where I am going.”This made the Jews ask,“ Will he kill himself? Is that why he says,‘ You can’t come where I am going’?”But Jesus said,“ You are from below. I am from heaven. You are from this world. I am not from this world.I told you that you would die in your sins. This will happen if you don’t believe that I am he. If you don’t believe, you will certainly die in your sins.”

But there are others who only look out for themselves. They don’t accept the truth. They go astray. God will pour out his great anger on them.There will be trouble and suffering for everyone who does evil. That is meant first for the Jews. It is also meant for the Gentiles.
