He wants to stop them from going down into the grave. He doesn’t want them to be killed by swords.

God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.

The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.But Paul shouted,“ Don’t harm yourself! and he is gracious to that person and says to God,‘ Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them—

to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.

They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
