to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.

He wants to stop them from going down into the grave. He doesn’t want them to be killed by swords.

He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death.

God spares his soul from the Pit, his life from crossing the river of death.

He keeps his soul back from the pit, And his life from perishing by the spear.

Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

He does not believe that he will return out of darkness, and he is marked for the sword.

He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,

When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.But Paul cried with a loud voice,“ Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.”And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas.Then he brought them out and said,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”And they said,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family.

and he is merciful to him, and says,‘ Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom;

to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life.

His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death.
