“ Have I ever rejoiced when disaster struck my enemies, or become excited when harm came their way?

“我若见恨我的遭报就欢喜，见他遭灾便高兴；

“我若见恨我的遇难就欢喜，见他遭灾就高兴；

“我何曾因敌人遭殃而欢喜，因他们遇祸而快乐？

我若因憾我者被滅而欣喜、緣其遭禍而氣揚、

仇有禍、未嘗欣喜踴躍。

何曾因敵遇災而喜、何曾因其遭禍而踴躍、

“ If I have rejoiced at my enemy’s misfortune or gloated over the trouble that came to him—

“ I wasn’t happy when hard times came to my enemies. I didn’t enjoy seeing the trouble they had.

“ If I have rejoiced at the ruin of him who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook him

Have I rejoiced over my enemy’s distress, or become excited when trouble came his way?

“ Have I rejoiced at the misfortune of my enemy, Or become excited when evil found him?

“ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, Or lifted myself up when evil found him

If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, Or lifted up myself when evil found him

Have I rejoiced over my enemy’s distress, or become excited when trouble came his way?

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

If I have rejoiced over the misfortune of my enemy or exulted because calamity found him–

“ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him

Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.

Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

Don’t let them say,“ Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!”May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor.

Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered.I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother.

They mourned and wept and fasted all day for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the Lord’s army and the nation of Israel, because they had died by the sword that day.

Someone once told me,‘ Saul is dead,’ thinking he was bringing me good news. But I seized him and killed him at Ziklag. That’s the reward I gave him for his news!How much more should I reward evil men who have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed? Shouldn’t I hold you responsible for his blood and rid the earth of you?”

“ You should not have gloated when they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You should not have rejoiced when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune. You should not have spoken arrogantly in that terrible time of trouble.

As King David came to Bahurim, a man came out of the village cursing them. It was Shimei son of Gera, from the same clan as Saul’s family.He threw stones at the king and the king’s officers and all the mighty warriors who surrounded him.“ Get out of here, you murderer, you scoundrel!” he shouted at David.“ The Lord is paying you back for all the bloodshed in Saul’s clan. You stole his throne, and now the Lord has given it to your son Absalom. At last you will taste some of your own medicine, for you are a murderer!”
