because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.

That’s because I saved poor people who cried out for help. I saved helpless children whose fathers had died.

For I assisted the poor in their need and the orphans who required help.

For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, and the fatherless child who had no one to support him.

Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.

He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.

You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry,and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.

Is not your evil abundant? There is no end to your iniquities.For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing.You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man lived in it.You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed.

They thrust the poor off the road; the poor of the earth all hide themselves.

For there were those who said,“ With our sons and our daughters, we are many. So let us get grain, that we may eat and keep alive.”There were also those who said,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine.”And there were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them,“ You are exacting interest, each from his brother.” And I held a great assembly against themand said to them,“ We, as far as we are able, have bought back our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations, but you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us!” They were silent and could not find a word to say.So I said,“ The thing that you are doing is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?Moreover, I and my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain. Let us abandon this exacting of interest.Return to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses, and the percentage of money, grain, wine, and oil that you have been exacting from them.”Then they said,“ We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say.” And I called the priests and made them swear to do as they had promised.I also shook out the fold of my garment and said,“ So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not keep this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied.” And all the assembly said“ Amen” and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Is not this to know me? declares the Lord.

“ How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? SelahGive justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.If you say,“ Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?
