because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.

That’s because I saved poor people who cried out for help. I saved helpless children whose fathers had died.

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, Is God in his holy habitation.

He doth execute justice for the fatherless and widow, and loveth the sojourner, in giving him food and raiment.

Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.If thou afflict them at all, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry;and my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, Because I saw my help in the gate:

Is not thy wickedness great? They turn the needy out of the way: The poor of the earth all hide themselves.

Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the fatherless hath not eaten thereof

For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get grain, that we may eat and live.Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get grain, because of the dearth.There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute upon our fields and our vineyards.Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them.And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that were sold unto the nations; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word.Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, do lend them money and grain. I pray you, let us leave off this usury.Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise.Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the assembly said, Amen, and praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise.

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Was not this to know me? saith Jehovah.

How long will ye judge unjustly, And respect the persons of the wicked?[ SelahJudge the poor and fatherless: Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.Rescue the poor and needy: Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

Deliver them that are carried away unto death, And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this; Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? And shall not he render to every man according to his work?
