  • Genesis 18:25-32
Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldn’t do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?”And the Lord replied,“ If I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.”Then Abraham spoke again.“ Since I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.Suppose there are only forty five righteous people rather than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And the Lord said,“ I will not destroy it if I find forty five righteous people there.”Then Abraham pressed his request further.“ Suppose there are only forty?” And the Lord replied,“ I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.”“ Please don’t be angry, my Lord,” Abraham pleaded.“ Let me speak— suppose only thirty righteous people are found?” And the Lord replied,“ I will not destroy it if I find thirty.”Then Abraham said,“ Since I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continue— suppose there are only twenty?” And the Lord replied,“ Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”Finally, Abraham said,“ Lord, please don’t be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?” And the Lord replied,“ Then I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
  • Daniel 9:18-19
“ O my God, lean down and listen to me. Open your eyes and see our despair. See how your city— the city that bears your name— lies in ruins. For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”

But Moses objected.“ What will the Egyptians think when they hear about it?” he asked the Lord.“ They know full well the power you displayed in rescuing your people from Egypt. Now if you destroy them, the Egyptians will send a report to the inhabitants of this land, who have already heard that you live among your people. They know, Lord, that you have appeared to your people face to face and that your pillar of cloud hovers over them. They know that you go before them in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. Now if you slaughter all these people with a single blow, the nations that have heard of your fame will say,‘ The Lord was not able to bring them into the land he swore to give them, so he killed them in the wilderness.’“ Please, Lord, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed. For you said,‘ The Lord is slow to anger and filled with unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. But he does not excuse the guilty. He lays the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.’In keeping with your magnificent, unfailing love, please pardon the sins of this people, just as you have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt.”

Why let the Egyptians say,‘ Their God rescued them with the evil intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth’? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you have threatened against your people!Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You bound yourself with an oath to them, saying,‘ I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven. And I will give them all of this land that I have promised to your descendants, and they will possess it forever.’”
