蓋彼虐遇貧民、而遺棄之、強據第宅、不得建立、

蓋剝奪其民、至於貧乏、則遺棄之、人所建之第宅、則強據之。

貧民則欺壓遺棄、強據第宅、並不自建、

For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute; he has seized houses he did not build.

They’ve crushed poor people and left them with nothing. They’ve taken over houses they didn’t even build.

For he has crushed and abandoned the poor; he has seized a house that he did not build.

For they oppressed the poor and left them destitute. They foreclosed on their homes.

“ People cry out because of the excess of oppression; they cry out for help because of the power of the mighty.

The one who oppresses the poor insults his Creator, but whoever shows favor to the needy honors him.

“ If I have disregarded the right of my male servants or my female servants when they disputed with me,then what will I do when God confronts me in judgment; when he intervenes, how will I respond to him?Did not the one who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us in the womb?If I have refused to give the poor what they desired, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail,If I ate my morsel of bread myself, and did not share any of it with orphans–but from my youth I raised the orphan like a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided the widow!If I have seen anyone about to perish for lack of clothing, or a poor man without a coat,whose heart did not bless me as he warmed himself with the fleece of my sheep,if I have raised my hand to vote against the orphan, when I saw my support in the court,then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let my arm be broken off at the socket.

Men move boundary stones; they seize the flock and pasture them.They drive away the orphan’s donkey; they take the widow’s ox as a pledge.They turn the needy from the pathway, and the poor of the land hide themselves together.Like wild donkeys in the desert they go out to their labor, seeking diligently for food; the wasteland provides food for them and for their children.They reap fodder in the field, and glean in the vineyard of the wicked.They spend the night naked because they lack clothing; they have no covering against the cold.They are soaked by mountain rains and huddle in the rocks because they lack shelter.The fatherless child is snatched from the breast, the infant of the poor is taken as a pledge.They go about naked, without clothing, and go hungry while they carry the sheaves.They press out the olive oil between the rows of olive trees; they tread the winepresses while they are thirsty.From the city the dying groan, and the wounded cry out for help, but God charges no one with wrongdoing.

To crush underfoot all the earth’s prisoners,

So I again considered all the oppression that continually occurs on earth. This is what I saw: The oppressed were in tears, but no one was comforting them; no one delivers them from the power of their oppressors.

“ Yes, I know what you are thinking, the schemes by which you would wrong me.For you say,‘ Where now is the nobleman’s house, and where are the tents in which the wicked lived?’

Indeed Israel is the vineyard of the LORD who commands armies, the people of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got– disobedience! He waited for fairness, but look what he got– cries for help!Those who accumulate houses are as good as dead, those who also accumulate landed property until there is no land left, and you are the only landowners remaining within the land.

“ For you took pledges from your brothers for no reason, and you stripped the clothing from the naked.

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan who live on Mount Samaria! You oppress the poor; you crush the needy. You say to your husbands,“ Bring us more to drink!”The sovereign LORD confirms this oath by his own holy character:“ Certainly the time is approaching when you will be carried away in baskets, every last one of you in fishermen’s pots.Each of you will go straight through the gaps in the walls; you will be thrown out toward Harmon.” The LORD is speaking!

Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have wronged the poor and needy; they have oppressed the foreigner who lives among them and denied them justice.

As for the produce of your land and all your labor, a people you do not know will consume it, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.

Here I am. Bring a charge against me before the LORD and before his chosen king. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I wronged? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I taken a bribe so that I would overlook something? Tell me, and I will return it to you!”They replied,“ You have not wronged us or oppressed us. You have not taken anything from the hand of anyone.”

But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich oppressing you and dragging you into the courts?

Do not exploit a poor person because he is poor and do not crush the needy in court,for the LORD will plead their case and will rob those who are robbing them.

If you see the extortion of the poor, or the perversion of justice and fairness in the government, do not be astonished by the matter. For the high official is watched by a higher official, and there are higher ones over them!

They confiscate the fields they desire, and seize the houses they want. They defraud people of their homes, and deprive people of the land they have inherited.

You defend the fatherless and oppressed, so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them.

You wrongly evict widows among my people from their cherished homes. You defraud their children of their prized inheritance.

Say to him,‘ This is what the LORD says:“ Haven’t you committed murder and taken possession of the property of the deceased?”’ Then say to him,‘ This is what the LORD says:“ In the spot where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood they will also lick up your blood– yes, yours!”’”

“ If my land cried out against me and all its furrows wept together,if I have eaten its produce without paying, or caused the death of its owners,

Fire resides in his tent; over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.

For judgment is merciless for the one who has shown no mercy. But mercy triumphs over judgment.

“ Because of the violence done to the oppressed, because of the painful cries of the needy, I will spring into action,” says the LORD.“ I will provide the safety they so desperately desire.”
