What has happened to them shocks the people in the west. It terrifies the people in the east.

They of the west are appalled at his day, and horror seizes them of the east.

People in the west are appalled at their fate; people in the east are horrified.

Those in the west are appalled at his fate, while those in the east tremble in horror.

but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.

Kill all her young bulls; let them go down to the slaughter! Woe to them! For their day has come, the time for them to be punished.

“‘ You profane and wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, whose time of punishment has reached its climax,

They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

“ He has alienated my family from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.My relatives have gone away; my closest friends have forgotten me.My guests and my female servants count me a foreigner; they look on me as on a stranger.I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth.My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome to my own family.Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me.All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me.

Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell.“ Tear it down,” they cried,“ tear it down to its foundations!”

On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.You should not gloat over your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble.“ The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.

and said,“ If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace— but now it is hidden from your eyes.

This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’

The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur— nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in fierce anger.All the nations will ask:“ Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?”

When they saw him from a distance, they could hardly recognize him; they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads.Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was.

Their land will be an object of horror and of lasting scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads.
