在我往而不返之先、使我稍得安息、我所將往之處、乃幽暗死陰之地、

before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and utter darkness,

Turn away before I go to the place I can’t return from. It’s the land of gloom and total darkness.

before I go— and I shall not return— to the land of darkness and deep shadow,

before I leave— never to return— for the land of darkness and utter gloom.

願黑暗和死蔭索取那日，願密雲停在其上，願白天的昏暗恐嚇它。

現在孩子死了，我何必禁食呢？我能使他回來嗎？我必往他那裏去，他卻不能回到我這裏來。」

因為再過幾年，我必走那往而不返之路。」

我雖然行過死蔭的幽谷，也不怕遭害，因為你與我同在；你的杖、你的竿，都安慰我。

但壯士一死就消逝了；人一氣絕，他在何處呢？海中的水枯竭，江河消散乾涸。人一躺下就不再起來，等到諸天沒有了，仍不復醒，也不能從睡中喚醒。惟願你把我藏在陰間，把我隱藏，直到你的憤怒過去；願你為我定下期限，並記得我。壯士若死了能再活嗎？我在一切服役的日子中等待，直到我退伍的時候來到。

觀看我的人，他的眼必不看見我；你的眼目投向我，我卻不在了。雲彩消散而去；照樣，人下陰間也不再上來。他不再回自己的家，他自己的地方也不再認得他。

不然，我現在已躺臥安睡，而且，早已長眠安息；

我們都必死，如同水潑在地上，不能收回。上帝不會讓人不死，但仍設法使逃亡的人不致成為趕出、回不來的人。

你的慈愛豈能在墳墓裏被人述說嗎？你的信實豈能在冥府被人傳揚嗎？你的奇事豈能在幽暗裏為人所知嗎？你的公義豈能在遺忘之地為人所識嗎？

我說，我必不得見耶和華，不得在活人之地見耶和華，也不再看見世人，就是短暫世界中的居民。

你把我放在極深的地府裏，在黑暗地，在深處。

他們並不問：『那領我們從埃及地上來，引導我們走過曠野、沙漠有坑洞之地，走過乾旱死蔭、無人經過、無人居住之地的耶和華在哪裏呢？』
