before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and utter darkness,

Turn away before I go to the place I can’t return from. It’s the land of gloom and total darkness.

before I go— and I shall not return— to the land of darkness and deep shadow,

before I go to a land of darkness and gloom, never to return.

For soon I must go down that road from which I will never return.

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

“ But when people die, their strength is gone. They breathe their last, and then where are they?As water evaporates from a lake and a river disappears in drought,people are laid to rest and do not rise again. Until the heavens are no more, they will not wake up nor be roused from their sleep.“ I wish you would hide me in the grave and forget me there until your anger has passed. But mark your calendar to think of me again!Can the dead live again? If so, this would give me hope through all my years of struggle, and I would eagerly await the release of death.

You see me now, but not for long. You will look for me, but I will be gone.Just as a cloud dissipates and vanishes, those who die will not come back.They are gone forever from their home— never to be seen again.

Had I died at birth, I would now be at peace. I would be asleep and at rest.

All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, he devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from him.

Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?

I said,“ Never again will I see the Lord God while still in the land of the living. Never again will I see my friends or be with those who live in this world.

You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.

They did not ask,‘ Where is the Lord who brought us safely out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness— a land of deserts and pits, a land of drought and death, where no one lives or even travels?’
