Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him,“ Are we blind also?”

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked,“ What? Are we blind too?”

Some Pharisees who were standing nearby heard him and asked,“ Are you saying we’re blind?”

Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him,“ We are not blind too, are we?”

Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?

Because you say,‘ I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’— and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—

Then His disciples came and said to Him,“ Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”But He answered and said,“ Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law.You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?You who say,“ Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

Then the Pharisees answered them,“ Are you also deceived?Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”Nicodemus( he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,“ Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?”They answered and said to him,“ Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.’Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?And,‘ Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.’Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it.He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it.And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

They answered and said to him,“ You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?” And they cast him out.

Then the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness.Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.”Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him,“ Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”And He said,“ Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs.Therefore the wisdom of God also said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.“ Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things,lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.
