The Jewish leaders still refused to believe the man had been blind and could now see, so they called in his parents.

猶太人不信其素瞽而後目明、遂呼其父母、

猶太人因懷疑其人、不信其由盲而復明也。

They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.

They still did not believe that the man had been blind and now could see. So they sent for his parents.

The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight

The Jews did not believe this about him— that he was blind and received sight— until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.

The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,

But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight.

The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,

The Jews did not believe this about him— that he was blind and received sight— until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.

Now the Jewish religious leaders refused to believe that he had really been blind and had gained his sight until at last they summoned the parents of the man who had become able to see.

The Jews therefore didn’t believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight,

But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in him.This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted:“ Lord, who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?”But the people couldn’t believe, for as Isaiah also said,“ The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts— so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and have me heal them.”

So Lot rushed out to tell his daughters’ fiancés,“ Quick, get out of the city! The Lord is about to destroy it.” But the young men thought he was only joking.

His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.

Remember what it says:“ Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.”And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt?And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness?And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him?So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest.

O Lord, they pay no attention to your upraised fist. Show them your eagerness to defend your people. Then they will be ashamed. Let your fire consume your enemies.

“ But Abraham said,‘ If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

No wonder you can’t believe! For you gladly honor each other, but you don’t care about the honor that comes from the one who alone is God.

This was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Temple assistants from Jerusalem to ask John,“ Who are you?”

So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

Who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?
