他們彼此說：「我們在弟弟的事上實在有罪。他懇求我們的時候，我們見他心中苦楚，卻不肯聽，所以現在這苦楚臨到我們了。」魯本就回應他們，說：「我不是對你們說過：『不要對那孩子犯罪』嗎？可是你們不肯聽；看哪，他的血債現在來追討了！」

你這說不可通姦的，難道自己還通姦嗎？你這憎惡偶像的，難道自己還偷取廟裡的東西嗎？

願那些尋索要除掉我性命的，一同抱愧蒙羞；願那些喜歡我遭害的，後退受辱。

耶穌說了這些話，所有反對他的人都感到蒙羞，可是眾人都因他所行的一切榮耀的事而感到歡喜。

願我的死敵，蒙羞滅絕；願那些謀求害我的，披戴辱罵和羞愧。

那時有上萬的人群聚集，甚至彼此踐踏。耶穌一開始先對他的門徒們說：「你們要提防法利賽人的酵母，就是偽善。被掩蓋的事沒有將不被顯露出來的，隱祕的事也沒有將不被知道的。所以你們在暗中所說的，會在明處被聽見；你們在內室裡耳語的，將要在屋頂上被宣揚出去。

你做了這些，我還保持沉默；你就以為我完全像你一樣；其實我要責備你，並且把這些擺列在你眼前。

耶穌直起身來問她：「婦人，他們在哪裡？沒有人定你的罪嗎？」

耶穌又對眾人說：「我就是世界的光。跟從我的人，絕不會在黑暗裡行走，卻要得到生命的光。」

耶穌的名聲被傳揚出去，希律王也聽見了。有些人說：「施洗者約翰從死人中復活了，所以這些能力在他裡面做工。」也有些人說：「他是以利亞。」還有些人說：「他是個先知，像古代先知中的一位。」但希律聽了卻說：「是被我砍了頭的約翰！這個人復活了！」

清晨，耶穌又來到聖殿，全體民眾到他那裡，他就坐下，開始教導他們。
