然則爾乃大於已亡之祖亞伯漢、與夫已亡之諸先知乎？爾自以為何如人耶？』

Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?

Are You greater than our father Abraham who died? Even the prophets died. Who do You pretend to be?”

Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

You aren’t greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? And the prophets died too! Who do you claim to be?”

Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”

And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

This Melchizedek was king of the city of Salem and also a priest of God Most High. When Abraham was returning home after winning a great battle against the kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him.Then Abraham took a tenth of all he had captured in battle and gave it to Melchizedek. The name Melchizedek means“ king of justice,” and king of Salem means“ king of peace.”There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors— no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God.Consider then how great this Melchizedek was. Even Abraham, the great patriarch of Israel, recognized this by giving him a tenth of what he had taken in battle.Now the law of Moses required that the priests, who are descendants of Levi, must collect a tithe from the rest of the people of Israel, who are also descendants of Abraham.But Melchizedek, who was not a descendant of Levi, collected a tenth from Abraham. And Melchizedek placed a blessing upon Abraham, the one who had already received the promises of God.And without question, the person who has the power to give a blessing is greater than the one who is blessed.

So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.

“ The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here— but you refuse to repent.The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here— but you refuse to listen.

The Jewish leaders replied,“ By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.”

for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.The Father and I are one.”

Jesus answered,“ I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!”

I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple!

For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself.

The crowd responded,“ We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?”

They replied,“ We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.”

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
