They answered him,“ We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say,‘ You will become free’?”

They answered him,“ We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

They answered him,“ We are Abraham’s children. We have never been slaves of anyone. So how can you say that we will be set free?”

“ But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said.“ We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean,‘ You will be set free’?”

“ We are descendants of Abraham,” they answered him,“ and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say,‘ You will become free’?”

They answered Him,“ We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say,‘ You will become free’?”

They answered Him,“ We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say,‘ You will be made free’?”

They answered unto him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

“ We are descendants of Abraham,” they answered Him,“ and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say,‘ You will become free’?”

They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

“ We are descendants of Abraham,” they replied,“ and have never been anyone’s slaves! How can you say,‘ You will become free’?”

They answered him,“ We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say,‘ You will be made free’?”

And do not presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

They answered him,“ Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them,“ If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,

I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.

Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemies, who made them suffer. And in the time of their suffering they cried out to you and you heard them from heaven, and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies.But after they had rest they did evil again before you, and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven, and many times you delivered them according to your mercies.

Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them.

Then the Lord said to Abram,“ Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.

And there were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words.I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them,“ You are exacting interest, each from his brother.” And I held a great assembly against themand said to them,“ We, as far as we are able, have bought back our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations, but you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us!” They were silent and could not find a word to say.

For we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection in Judea and Jerusalem.

For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves.

Behold, we are slaves this day; in the land that you gave to our fathers to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts, behold, we are slaves.And its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.

So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slavesand made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, for he had 900 chariots of iron and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years.

Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
