耶穌面對奉獻箱坐著，看眾人怎樣把錢投入奉獻箱裡。許多富有的人投進了很多錢。

耶穌把他的門徒們召來，對他們說：「我確實地告訴你們：這窮寡婦所投入奉獻箱的，比所有的人投的更多。

祭司長們撿起銀錢，說：「這既然是血錢，不可以放到聖殿奉獻裡。」

於是他們又試圖抓耶穌，他卻從他們的手中脫離出來。

其中有些人想要抓他，可是沒有人下手。

就在這時候，有一些法利賽人前來對耶穌說：「你離開吧，從這裡走開！因為希律想要殺你。」耶穌對他們說：「你們去告訴那狐狸：看哪！今天明天我驅趕鬼魔、治癒疾病，然後在第三天，我的事就得以完成了。不過今天、明天、後天，我必須往前走，因為先知不能在耶路撒冷之外被殺！

耶穌回答：「白天不是有十二個小時嗎？人如果在白天行走，就不會絆倒，因為他看見這世界的光。但人如果在黑夜裡行走，就會絆倒，因為在他裡面沒有光。」

他們因此拿起石頭要砸他。耶穌卻被隱藏，離開了聖殿。

經文士和祭司長們知道這個比喻是針對他們而說的，當時就想下手捉拿耶穌，可是又怕民眾。
