伯利恆的以法他啊，你在猶大諸城中雖小，將來必有一位從你那裏出來，在以色列中為我作掌權者；他的根源自亙古，從太初就有。

他們說：「在猶太的伯利恆。因為有先知記着：

約瑟也從加利利的拿撒勒城上猶太去，到了大衛的城名叫伯利恆，因為他是大衛家族的人，

因今天在大衛的城裏，為你們生了救主，就是主基督。

從耶西的殘幹必長出嫩枝，他的根所抽的枝子必結果實。

僕人中有一個回答說：「看哪，我曾見伯利恆人耶西的一個兒子善於彈琴，是大能的勇士，說話合宜，容貌俊美，耶和華也與他同在。」

然而，我們知道這個人從哪裏來；可是基督來的時候，沒有人知道他從哪裏來。」

掃羅問他說：「年輕人，你是誰的兒子？」大衛說：「我是你僕人伯利恆人耶西的兒子。」

撒母耳遵照耶和華的話去做，來到伯利恆，城裏的長老都戰戰兢兢出來迎接他，有人問他說：「你是為平安來的嗎？」

撒母耳對耶西說：「你的兒子都在這裏了嗎？」他說：「還有一個最小的，看哪，他正在放羊。」撒母耳對耶西說：「你派人去叫他來；他若不來這裏，我們必不坐席。」耶西就派人去叫他來。他面色紅潤，雙目清秀，容貌俊美。耶和華說：「起來，膏他，因為這就是他了。」撒母耳就用角裏的膏油，在他的兄長中膏了他。從這日起，耶和華的靈就大大感動大衛。撒母耳起身回拉瑪去了。
