從耶西的樹墩必發出一個嫩芽，從他的根而出的枝子必結果實。

耶和華對撒母耳說：「你為掃羅悲慟要到什麼時候呢？我已經厭棄他作以色列的王。你把犄角裝滿膏油，去吧，我要派遣你到伯利恆人耶西那裡，因為我在他的兒子中選定了一個王。」

耶和華以信實向大衛起了誓，必不收回，他說：「我將從你親生的後裔中，立一位坐在你的寶座上。

我要使你的後裔堅立，直到永遠；我要建立你的寶座，直到萬代。」細拉

僕人中有一個人回應說：「看哪，我見過伯利恆人耶西的一個兒子，他善於彈琴，又是個有能力的勇士，是個戰士；他言談有智慧，身材健美，又有耶和華與他同在。」

可是，基督出現的時候，沒有人會知道他從哪裡來；而這個人，我們卻很清楚他是從哪裡來的。」

掃羅問大衛：「少年人，你是誰的兒子？」大衛回答：「我是你僕人伯利恆人耶西的兒子。」

於是撒母耳照耶和華所吩咐的去做，來到伯利恆。那城的長老們戰戰兢兢地迎接他，問：「你是為平安而來的嗎？」

撒母耳問耶西：「孩子們全來了嗎？」耶西回答：「還剩下最小的那個，看哪，他正在放羊。」撒母耳對耶西說：「派人去把他帶來，在他來到之前，我們不會入席。」耶西就派人去把他帶來；他面色紅潤，雙目清秀，樣貌英俊。耶和華說：「起來膏抹他，就是這個人！」於是撒母耳拿起裝膏油的犄角，在他兄弟們當中膏抹了他。從那天以後，耶和華的靈就大大臨到大衛。撒母耳起身回拉瑪去了。
