For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.”

从耶西的树墩必发出一个嫩芽，从他的根而出的枝子必结果实。

耶和华对撒母耳说：“你为扫罗悲恸要到什么时候呢？我已经厌弃他作以色列的王。你把犄角装满膏油，去吧，我要派遣你到伯利恒人耶西那里，因为我在他的儿子中选定了一个王。”

耶和华以信实向大卫起了誓，必不收回，他说：“我将从你亲生的后裔中，立一位坐在你的宝座上。

我要使你的后裔坚立，直到永远；我要建立你的宝座，直到万代。”细拉

臣仆中有一个人回应说：“看哪，我见过伯利恒人耶西的一个儿子，他善于弹琴，又是个有能力的勇士，是个战士；他言谈有智慧，身材健美，又有耶和华与他同在。”

可是，基督出现的时候，没有人会知道他从哪里来；而这个人，我们却很清楚他是从哪里来的。”

扫罗问大卫：“少年人，你是谁的儿子？”大卫回答：“我是你仆人伯利恒人耶西的儿子。”

于是撒母耳照耶和华所吩咐的去做，来到伯利恒。那城的长老们战战兢兢地迎接他，问：“你是为平安而来的吗？”

撒母耳问耶西：“孩子们全来了吗？”耶西回答：“还剩下最小的那个，看哪，他正在放羊。”撒母耳对耶西说：“派人去把他带来，在他来到之前，我们不会入席。”耶西就派人去把他带来；他面色红润，双目清秀，样貌英俊。耶和华说：“起来膏抹他，就是这个人！”于是撒母耳拿起装膏油的犄角，在他兄弟们当中膏抹了他。从那天以后，耶和华的灵就大大临到大卫。撒母耳起身回拉玛去了。
