The Lord says,“ Bethlehem Ephrathah, you might not be an important town in the nation of Judah. But out of you will come for me a ruler over Israel. His family line goes back to the early years of your nation. It goes all the way back to days of long ago.”

They said,“ Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don’t we know his father and mother? How can he now say,‘ I came down from heaven’?”

He came to his hometown of Nazareth. There he began teaching the people in their synagogue. They were amazed.“ Where did this man get this wisdom? Where did he get this power to do miracles?” they asked.“ Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary? Aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?Aren’t all his sisters with us? Then where did this man get all these things?”They were not pleased with him at all. But Jesus said to them,“ A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own town and in his own home.”

We know that God spoke to Moses. But we don’t even know where this fellow comes from.”

Others said,“ He is the Messiah.” Still others asked,“ How can the Messiah come from Galilee?Doesn’t Scripture say that the Messiah will come from the family line of David? Doesn’t it say that he will come from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”

Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son? Isn’t this the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” They were not pleased with him at all.

“ In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied.“ This is what the prophet has written. He said,“‘ But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are certainly not the least important among the towns of Judah. A ruler will come out of you. He will rule my people Israel like a shepherd.’ ”( Micah 5:2)

Jesse’s family is like a tree that has been cut down. A new little tree will grow from its stump. From its roots a Branch will grow and produce fruit.

Everyone said good things about him. They were amazed at the gracious words they heard from his lips.“ Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

The Jews there were amazed. They asked,“ How did this man learn so much without being taught?”

When he was treated badly, he was refused a fair trial. Who can say anything about his children? His life was cut off from the earth.”( Isaiah 53:7, 8)

“ A new day is coming,” announces the Lord.“ At that time I will raise up for David’s royal line a godly Branch. He will be a King who will rule wisely. He will do what is fair and right in the land.

Their leader will be one of their own people. Their ruler will rise up from among them. I will bring him near. And he will come close to me. He will commit himself to serve me,” announces the Lord.

He was arrested and sentenced to death. Then he was taken away. He was cut off from this life. He was punished for the sins of my people. Who among those who were living at that time tried to stop what was happening?
