Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; One will come from you to be ruler over Israel for Me. His origin is from antiquity, from eternity.

They were saying,“ Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say,‘ I have come down from heaven’?”

He went to His hometown and began to teach them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said,“ How did this wisdom and these miracles come to Him?Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother called Mary, and His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?And His sisters, aren’t they all with us? So where does He get all these things?”And they were offended by Him. But Jesus said to them,“ A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his household.”

We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man— we don’t know where He’s from!”

Others said,“ This is the Messiah!” But some said,“ Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does He?Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David’s offspring and from the town of Bethlehem, where David once lived?”

Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t His sisters here with us?” So they were offended by Him.

“ In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him,“ because this is what was written by the prophet:And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah: because out of you will come a leader who will shepherd My people Israel.”

Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.

They were all speaking well of Him and were amazed by the gracious words that came from His mouth, yet they said,“ Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

Then the Jews were amazed and said,“ How does He know the Scriptures, since He hasn’t been trained?”

In His humiliation justice was denied Him. Who will describe His generation? For His life is taken from the earth.

“ The days are coming”— this is the Lord’s declaration—“ when I will raise up a Righteous Branch of David. He will reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land.

Jacob’s leader will be one of them; his ruler will issue from him. I will invite him to Me, and he will approach Me, for who would otherwise risk his life to approach Me? This is the Lord’s declaration.

He was taken away because of oppression and judgment; and who considered His fate? For He was cut off from the land of the living; He was struck because of my people’s rebellion.
