Some of the Pharisees said,“ This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.” Others said,“ But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them.

“ Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked.

When the Pharisees heard that the crowds were whispering such things, they and the leading priests sent Temple guards to arrest Jesus.

Some of the people who lived in Jerusalem started to ask each other,“ Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Could our leaders possibly believe that he is the Messiah?But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from.”

Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph. He was a member of the Jewish high council,

They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet.

When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said,“ Surely this man was innocent.”

They told him,“ Sir, we remember what that deceiver once said while he was still alive:‘ After three days I will rise from the dead.’

Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!

Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying,“ A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and“ God has visited his people today.”

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,“ Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”“ Well,” they replied,“ some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”Then he asked them,“ But who do you say I am?”Simon Peter answered,“ You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

“ Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him.“ Only God is truly good.

Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord.

They replied,“ Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself— no prophet ever comes from Galilee!”[ The most ancient Greek manuscripts do not include John 7:53–8:11.]

When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions about him.Some said,“ He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”Others said,“ This doesn’t sound like a man possessed by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good.

When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed,“ Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”
