After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He didn’t want to travel around in Judea. That was because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him.

Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath day. So the Jewish leaders began to oppose him.Jesus defended himself. He said to them,“ My Father is always doing his work. He is working right up to this day. I am working too.”For this reason the Jewish leaders tried even harder to kill him. According to them, Jesus was not only breaking the law of the Sabbath day. He was even calling God his own Father. He was making himself equal with God.

Didn’t Moses give you the law? But not one of you obeys the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”

So Jesus left Judea and went back again to Galilee.

When people attack you in one place, escape to another. What I’m about to tell you is true. You will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

“ But the renters saw the son coming. They said to one another,‘ This is the one who will receive all the owner’s property someday. Come, let’s kill him. Then everything will be ours.’

The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was. John spoke the truth to them.

This was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

You know how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Jesus went around doing good. He healed all who were under the devil’s power. God was with him.

At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus. They said to him,“ Leave this place. Go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.”He replied,“ Go and tell that fox,‘ I will keep on driving out demons. I will keep on healing people today and tomorrow. And on the third day I will reach my goal.’In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day. Certainly no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

Then some of the people of Jerusalem began asking questions. They said,“ Isn’t this the man some people are trying to kill?

But you are looking for a way to kill me. I am a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do the things you want to do.

I know that you are Abraham’s children. But you are looking for a way to kill me. You have no room for my word.

So from that day on, the Jewish rulers planned to kill Jesus.Jesus no longer moved around openly among the people of Judea. Instead, he went away to an area near the desert. He went to a village called Ephraim. There he stayed with his disciples.

Again they tried to arrest him. But he escaped from them.Then Jesus went back across the Jordan River. He went to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed.
