turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly livesas you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

Everyone’s toil is for their mouth, yet their appetite is never satisfied.

“ Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.

I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”

These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.

You say,“ Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

“ Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.

As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when they have children there is nothing left for them to inherit.Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.This too is a grievous evil: As everyone comes, so they depart, and what do they gain, since they toil for the wind?

Jesus said to her,“ I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

So do not worry, saying,‘ What shall we eat?’ or‘ What shall we drink?’ or‘ What shall we wear?’For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

“ The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.He began by saying to them,“ Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Jesus answered,“ I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked,“ Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”“ Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered,“ you are worried and upset about many things,but few things are needed— or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

Jesus replied,“ Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

Has not the Lord Almighty determined that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
