耶穌知道群眾要來強迫他作王，就獨自又退到山上去了。到了晚上，他的門徒下到海邊去。他們上了船，要渡海往迦百農去。那時天已經黑了，耶穌還沒有到他們那裡。忽然海上起了狂風，波浪翻騰。門徒搖櫓約行了五六公里，看見耶穌在海面上行走，漸漸靠近船，就害怕起來。耶穌對他們說：“是我，不要怕。”他們這才把他接上船，船就立刻到了他們要去的地方。

事後耶穌立刻催門徒上船，叫他們先渡到對岸的伯賽大去，等他自己叫眾人散開。他離開了他們，就上山去禱告。到了晚上，船在海中，耶穌獨自在岸上，看見門徒辛辛苦苦地搖櫓，因為風不順。天快亮的時候（“天快亮的時候”原文作“夜裡四更天”），耶穌在海面上向他們走去，想要趕過他們。門徒看見他在海面上走，以為是鬼怪，就喊叫起來；因為他們都看見了他，非常恐懼。耶穌立刻對他們說：“放心吧！是我，不要怕。”於是上了船，和他們在一起，風就平靜了。門徒心裡十分驚奇，因為他們還不明白分餅這件事的意義，他們的心還是遲鈍。

耶穌的弟弟就對他說：“你應當離開這裡上猶太去，好讓你的門徒也可以看見你所行的事；因為沒有人想引人注目，卻在暗處行事的。你既然行這些事，就應該向世人顯明自己。”

耶穌立刻催門徒上船，叫他們先到對岸去，他卻留下來叫群眾散開。他解散了群眾，就獨自上山去禱告。到了晚上，他還是獨自一人在那裡。那時門徒的船已經離岸數公里，因為逆風，被波浪沖擊。天快亮的時候﹙“天快亮的時候”原文作“夜裡四更天”。﹚，耶穌在海面上向他們走過去。門徒見他在海面上行走，就很驚慌，說：“有鬼啊！”並且恐懼得大叫起來。耶穌立刻對他們說：“放心吧！是我，不要怕。”彼得對他說：“主啊，如果是你，讓我在水面上到你那裡去。”他說：“來吧！”彼得就從船上下來，行在水面上，走向耶穌那裡去。但他一見風浪就害怕，快要沉下去的時候，就呼叫：“主啊！救我！”耶穌馬上伸手拉住他，對他說：“小信的人哪，為甚麼疑惑？”他們上了船，風就平靜了。船上的人都拜他，說：“你真是神的兒子。”

前行後隨的人都喊著說：“‘和散那’，奉主名來的是應當稱頌的！

說：“奉主名來的王，是應當稱頌的！在天上有和平，在至高之處有榮耀！”

第二天，有一大群上來過節的人，聽見耶穌要來耶路撒冷，就拿著棕樹枝出去迎接他，歡呼說：“和散那，奉主名來的以色列王，是應當稱頌的！”耶穌找到一頭小驢，就騎在上面，正如經上所記的：“錫安的居民哪，不要懼怕；看哪，你的王來了，他騎著小驢來了。”

耶穌上了山，同門徒坐在那裡。

耶穌卻不信任他們，因為他知道所有的人，也不需要誰指證人是怎樣的，因為他知道人心裡存的是甚麼。

被造的在神面前沒有一樣不是顯明的，萬有在他的眼前都是赤露敞開的；我們必須向他交帳。
