耶穌知道他們想強行立祂作王，便獨自退到山上。傍晚的時候，門徒來到湖邊，上了船，去湖對岸的迦百農。天色已暗，耶穌還沒到他們那裡。忽然，湖面上狂風大作，波濤洶湧。門徒搖櫓，大約行了五六公里，突然看見耶穌在水面上朝他們的船走來，他們很害怕。耶穌對他們說：「是我，不要怕。」於是門徒欣然接祂上船，船立刻到了目的地。

隨後，耶穌催門徒上船，叫他們先渡到湖對岸的伯賽大，祂則遣散眾人。祂辭別了眾人後，就上山去禱告。到了晚上，門徒的船在湖中心，耶穌獨自留在岸上。大約凌晨三點鐘，祂看見門徒在逆風中搖櫓，非常吃力，就從水面上朝門徒走去，想要從他們旁邊經過。門徒看見有人在湖面上走，以為是幽靈，嚇得驚叫起來。全船的人看見祂，都嚇壞了，耶穌立刻對他們說：「放心吧，是我，不要怕！」耶穌上了船，來到他們那裡，風便停了。門徒心裡十分驚奇，因為他們仍然不明白耶穌分餅那件事的意義，心裡還是愚頑。

耶穌的弟弟們對祂說：「離開這裡，去猶太過節吧，好讓你的門徒在那裡也看見你所做的啊！因為人想出名，都不會暗地裡行事，你既然可以做這些事，就把自己顯給世人看吧！」

隨後，耶穌催門徒上船，叫他們先渡到湖對岸，祂則遣散眾人。待眾人都離開了，祂就獨自上山去禱告，在那裡一直待到晚上。那時，門徒的船離岸已遠，遇到逆風，船身被波浪撞擊得搖擺不定。天將破曉的時候，耶穌從水面上向門徒走去。門徒看見有人在湖面上走，都嚇壞了，說：「是幽靈！」他們害怕得又喊又叫。耶穌立刻對他們說：「放心吧！是我，不要怕。」彼得說：「主啊！如果真的是你，就叫我從水面上走到你那裡。」耶穌說：「好，你來吧！」於是，彼得就從船上下去，走在湖面上，要去耶穌那裡。他看到風浪很大，就害怕起來，身體開始往下沉，便大喊：「主啊，救我！」耶穌馬上伸手拉住他，說：「你信心太小了！為什麼懷疑呢？」他們上了船，風浪就平靜了。船上的人都敬拜祂，說：「你真是上帝的兒子。」

大家前呼後擁，高聲歡呼：「和散那！奉主名來的當受稱頌！

「奉主名來的王當受稱頌！天上有平安，至高處有榮耀！」

第二天，很多上來過節的人聽見耶穌快到耶路撒冷了，就拿著棕樹枝出去迎接祂，並且高聲歡呼：「和散那！奉主名來的以色列王當受稱頌！」那時，耶穌找到一頭驢駒，就騎上牠，正如聖經記載：「錫安的居民啊，不要害怕！你的君王騎著驢駒來了。」

耶穌到了山上，與門徒一起坐下來。

耶穌卻不信任他們，因為祂洞悉萬人。不用別人告訴祂，祂也深知人的內心。

受造物在上帝面前都無法隱藏，因為萬物都是赤裸裸地暴露在上帝眼前，我們必須向祂交帳。
