This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means“ king of righteousness”; then also,“ king of Salem” means“ king of peace.”Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder!Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people— that is, from their fellow Israelites— even though they also are descended from Abraham.This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater.In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living.One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham,because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor. The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his. (niv)

The Lord said to Moses,“ Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.”So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived. (niv)

Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.These things are being taken figuratively: The women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar.Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.For it is written:“ Be glad, barren woman, you who never bore a child; shout for joy and cry aloud, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.At that time the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now.But what does Scripture say?“ Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman. (niv)

Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. (niv)

Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. (niv)
