As these disciples of John were going away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John:“ What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ palaces!But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.

Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I testify about you that, if possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?

And you, child, also will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways;To give His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,

But if we say,‘ From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.”

As a result of this many of His disciples left, and would no longer walk with Him.

At that time Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan;and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them,“ You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

The one sown with seed on the rocky places, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution occurs because of the word, immediately he falls away.

He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him.He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he had been protecting him. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; and yet he used to enjoy listening to him.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God.And it is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

And they come to you as people come, and sit before you as My people and hear your words, but they do not do them; for they do the lustful desires expressed by their mouth, and their heart follows their unlawful gain.

I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
