耶穌應曰：『倘汝知天主之宏恩、與夫向汝求飲者之為誰、則必反以求之、而彼將予汝以活水矣！』

The Samaritan woman said to him,“ You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?”( For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

The Samaritan woman said to him,“ How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?”( For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus,“ You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”

“ How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” she asked him. For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

So the Samaritan woman* said to Him,“ How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?”( For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Then the woman of Samaria said to Him,“ How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman?( For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

So the Samaritan woman said to him,“ How can you– a Jew– ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?”( For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)

The Samaritan woman therefore said to him,“ How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?”( For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

Peter said to them,“ You know it’s forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner. But God has shown me that I must not call any person common or unclean.

Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim and settled them in place of the Israelites in the cities of Samaria. The settlers took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities.When they first lived there, they did not fear Yahweh. So the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them.The settlers spoke to the king of Assyria, saying,“ The nations that you have deported and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Therefore He has sent lions among them that are killing them because the people don’t know the requirements of the God of the land.”Then the king of Assyria issued a command:“ Send back one of the priests you deported. Have him go and live there so he can teach them the requirements of the God of the land.”So one of the priests they had deported came and lived in Bethel, and he began to teach them how they should fear Yahweh.But the people of each nation were still making their own gods in the cities where they lived and putting them in the shrines of the high places that the people of Samaria had made.The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of the Sepharvaim.They feared the Lord, but they also appointed from their number priests to serve them in the shrines of the high places.They feared the Lord, but they also worshiped their own gods according to the custom of the nations where they had been deported from.They are still practicing the former customs to this day. None of them fear the Lord or observe their statutes and ordinances, the law and commandments the Lord commanded the descendants of Jacob. He had renamed him Israel.The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them,“ Do not fear other gods; do not bow down to them; do not serve them; do not sacrifice to them.Instead fear the Lord, who brought you from the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. You are to bow down to Him, and you are to sacrifice to Him.You are to be careful always to observe the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the commandments He wrote for you; do not fear other gods.Do not forget the covenant that I have made with you. Do not fear other gods,but fear the Lord your God, and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.”However, they would not listen but continued practicing their former customs.These nations feared the Lord but also served their idols. Their children and grandchildren continue doing as their fathers did until today.

The Jews responded to Him,“ Aren’t we right in saying that You’re a Samaritan and have a demon?”

When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple for Yahweh, the God of Israel,they approached Zerubbabel and the leaders of the families and said to them,“ Let us build with you, for we also worship your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time King Esar-haddon of Assyria brought us here.”But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the other leaders of Israel’s families answered them,“ You may have no part with us in building a house for our God, since we alone must build it for Yahweh, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.”Then the people who were already in the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build.They also bribed officials to act against them to frustrate their plans throughout the reign of King Cyrus of Persia and until the reign of King Darius of Persia.At the beginning of the reign of Ahasuerus, the people who were already in the land wrote an accusation against the residents of Judah and Jerusalem.During the time of King Artaxerxes of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his colleagues wrote to King Artaxerxes. The letter was written in Aramaic and translated.Rehum the chief deputy and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter to King Artaxerxes concerning Jerusalem as follows:From Rehum the chief deputy, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues— the judges and magistrates from Tripolis, Persia, Erech, Babylon, Susa( that is, the people of Elam),and the rest of the peoples whom the great and illustrious Ashurbanipal deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and the region west of the Euphrates River.This is the text of the letter they sent to him: To King Artaxerxes from your servants, the men from the region west of the Euphrates River:Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you have returned to us at Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and evil city, finishing its walls, and repairing its foundations.Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, duty, or land tax, and the royal revenue will suffer.Since we have taken an oath of loyalty to the king, and it is not right for us to witness his dishonor, we have sent to inform the kingthat a search should be made in your fathers’ record books. In these record books you will discover and verify that the city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces. There have been revolts in it since ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.We advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are finished, you will not have any possession west of the Euphrates.The king sent a reply to his chief deputy Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues living in Samaria and elsewhere in the region west of the Euphrates River: Greetings.The letter you sent us has been translated and read in my presence.I issued a decree and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has had uprisings against kings since ancient times, and there have been rebellions and revolts in it.Powerful kings have also ruled over Jerusalem and exercised authority over the whole region, and tribute, duty, and land tax were paid to them.Therefore, issue an order for these men to stop, so that this city will not be rebuilt until a further decree has been pronounced by me.See that you not neglect this matter. Otherwise, the damage will increase and the royal interests will suffer.As soon as the text of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read to Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their colleagues, they immediately went to the Jews in Jerusalem and forcibly stopped them.Now the construction of God’s house in Jerusalem had stopped and remained at a standstill until the second year of the reign of King Darius of Persia.

He fell facedown at His feet, thanking Him. And he was a Samaritan.Then Jesus said,“ Were not 10 cleansed? Where are the nine?Didn’t any return to give glory to God except this foreigner?”And He told him,“ Get up and go on your way. Your faith has made you well.”

He sent messengers ahead of Him, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for Him.But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem.When the disciples James and John saw this, they said,“ Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”But He turned and rebuked them,and they went to another village.

Just then His disciples arrived, and they were amazed that He was talking with a woman. Yet no one said,“ What do You want?” or“ Why are You talking with her?”

But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious. He mocked the Jewsbefore his colleagues and the powerful men of Samaria, and said,“ What are these pathetic Jews doing? Can they restore it by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they ever finish it? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble?”

Jesus sent out these 12 after giving them instructions:“ Don’t take the road leading to other nations, and don’t enter any Samaritan town.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
