Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,“ To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

“ But you shall seek the place where the Lord your God chooses, out of all your tribes, to put His name for His dwelling place; and there you shall go.There you shall take your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, your vowed offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.And there you shall eat before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice in all to which you have put your hand, you and your households, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.“ You shall not at all do as we are doing here today— every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes—for as yet you have not come to the rest and the inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you.But when you cross over the Jordan and dwell in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and He gives you rest from all your enemies round about, so that you dwell in safety,then there will be the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. There you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, and all your choice offerings which you vow to the Lord.

Then the Lord appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him:“ I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.

Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’

For the Lord has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place:

Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law.There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the strangers who were living among them.

But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.

Then David said,“ This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.

And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the Lord; and He answered him from heaven by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which He loved.

His foundation is in the holy mountains.The Lord loves the gates of Zion More than all the dwellings of Jacob.

So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying,“ The nations whom you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, and indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land.”Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying,“ Send there one of the priests whom you brought from there; let him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the rituals of the God of the land.”Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord.However every nation continued to make gods of its own, and put them in the shrines on the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities where they dwelt.The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,and the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.So they feared the Lord, and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places.They feared the Lord, yet served their own gods— according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were carried away.

And all the men of Shechem gathered together, all of Beth Millo, and they went and made Abimelech king beside the terebinth tree at the pillar that was in Shechem.Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and cried out. And he said to them:“ Listen to me, you men of Shechem, That God may listen to you!

And the Lord said to him:“ I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built to put My name there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.
