Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.The Lord appeared to Abram and said,“ To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

After Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent.There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.

When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin.

When the Lord your God has brought you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim on Mount Gerizim the blessings, and on Mount Ebal the curses.

But you are to seek the place the Lord your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name there for his dwelling. the Lord appeared to him at night and said:“ I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.

but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.

Then David said,“ The house of the Lord God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.

David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.

He has founded his city on the holy mountain.The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the other dwellings of Jacob.

It was reported to the king of Assyria:“ The people you deported and resettled in the towns of Samaria do not know what the god of that country requires. He has sent lions among them, which are killing them off, because the people do not know what he requires.”Then the king of Assyria gave this order:“ Have one of the priests you took captive from Samaria go back to live there and teach the people what the god of the land requires.”So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria came to live in Bethel and taught them how to worship the Lord.Nevertheless, each national group made its own gods in the several towns where they settled, and set them up in the shrines the people of Samaria had made at the high places.The people from Babylon made Sukkoth Benoth, those from Kuthah made Nergal, and those from Hamath made Ashima;the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire as sacrifices to Adrammelek and Anammelek, the gods of Sepharvaim.They worshiped the Lord, but they also appointed all sorts of their own people to officiate for them as priests in the shrines at the high places.They worshiped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought.

Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo gathered beside the great tree at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them,“ Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.

The Lord said to him:“ I have heard the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.
