Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,“ To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram, and he camped before the city.And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent.There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.

“ When you have crossed over the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.

And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, you shall set the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go,and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.And there you shall eat before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all that you undertake, in which the Lord your God has blessed you.“ You shall not do according to all that we are doing here today, everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes,for you have not as yet come to the rest and to the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you.But when you go over the Jordan and live in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and when he gives you rest from all your enemies around, so that you live in safety,then to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell there, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, and all your finest vow offerings that you vow to the Lord.

Then the Lord appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him:“ I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.

but I have chosen Jerusalem that my name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’

But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

Then David said,“ Here shall be the house of the Lord God and here the altar of burnt offering for Israel.”

For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.

And David built there an altar to the Lord and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings and called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering.

but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves.

On the holy mount stands the city he founded;the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.

So the king of Assyria was told,“ The nations that you have carried away and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the law of the god of the land. Therefore he has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them, because they do not know the law of the god of the land.”Then the king of Assyria commanded,“ Send there one of the priests whom you carried away from there, and let him go and dwell there and teach them the law of the god of the land.”So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and lived in Bethel and taught them how they should fear the Lord.But every nation still made gods of its own and put them in the shrines of the high places that the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities in which they lived.The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.They also feared the Lord and appointed from among themselves all sorts of people as priests of the high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places.So they feared the Lord but also served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from among whom they had been carried away.

And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them,“ Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

And the Lord said to him,“ I have heard your prayer and your plea, which you have made before me. I have consecrated this house that you have built, by putting my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.
