When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.
For Herod had arrested John, chained him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
For Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.
Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was going on. He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead, some that Elijah had appeared, and others that one of the ancient prophets had risen.“ I beheaded John,” Herod said,“ but who is this I hear such things about?” And he wanted to see him.
But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the evil things he had done,Herod added this to everything else— he locked up John in prison.
