約翰對那出來要受他洗禮的群眾說：“毒蛇所生的啊，誰指示你們逃避那將要來的忿怒呢？

“‘你的母親像葡萄園裡（按照《馬索拉文本》，“葡萄園裡”作“在你血中”；現參照其他抄本和《七十士譯本》翻譯）的一棵葡萄樹，栽種在水邊；因為水源充足，結果纍纍、枝葉茂盛。

你這住在眾水旁，多有財寶的啊！你的結局到了，你被剪除的時刻到了。
