And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Simon Peter said to him,“ Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied,“ Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”Peter said to him,“ Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”

( Now he said this to indicate clearly what kind of death he was going to die.)

My confident hope is that I will in no way be ashamed but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die.

But after turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said,“ Get behind me, Satan. You are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s.”Then Jesus called the crowd, along with his disciples, and said to them,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.For what benefit is it for a person to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his life?What can a person give in exchange for his life?For if anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

saying,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”Then he said to them all,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself?For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

Then Samuel said to the people,“ Don’t be afraid. You have indeed sinned. However, don’t turn aside from the LORD. Serve the LORD with all your heart.

From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him:“ God forbid, Lord! This must not happen to you!”But he turned and said to Peter,“ Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but on man’s.”Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Whoever speaks, let it be with God’s words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.

( This happened to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated what kind of death he was going to die.)

If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will be too. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

Jesus said to them,“ I tell you the truth: In the age when all things are renewed, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Only my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and has followed me fully– I will bring him into the land where he had gone, and his descendants will possess it.
